Product Description

Henckels Eversharp Pro Three Piece Kitchen Knife Set: Model HK-08336. Includes 3" paring, 5" serrated utility and 7" chef's knives. Micro-serrated stainless blades never need sharpening. Visible tang. Triple riveted polypropylene handles. Hang packaged. Made in Japan.

Amazon.com Review

This three-piece set of knives benefits from J.A. Henckels's 260 years in the cutlery business. The 8-inch chef's knife is a popular all-around knife for slicing and chopping, while the 5-inch utility knife will easily slice and dice smaller items, and the paring knife is great for peeling apples or slicing potatoes. They're made from high-grade, rolled stainless steel, produced using Henckels's own Sintermetal Component Technology. This process allows different grades of steel to be combined to form a single integral piece capable of withstanding extreme stress--each part of the knife is made from the grade of steel with the optimum characteristics for that component. Cutting edges feature a specially designed serration pattern, ensuring prolonged sharpness without resharpening. The full-length tang (meaning the metal continues all the way through to the end of the handle) gives you a better-balanced and stronger knife. The polypropylene handle with rustproof rivets is nearly indestructible. It's dishwasher-safe, but be careful that the blade doesn't touch other objects; hand washing is recommended to keep steel blades scratch free. --Doree Armstrong

Very nice knives for the price. Weighted well, attractive and comfortable to hold. I'm satisfied with the sharpness and quality. I did notice that they tend to spot if left to air-dry, so I hand wash & dry them right away.

I bought these knives as a starter kit and they really do a great job! I use each piece extensively and for someone who is just starting out, do not see an immediate need for additional knives. They are easy to handle, great value for the money (especially since they are J.A. Henckels!) and cut anything and everything well. There is no need to shop around some more if you are looking for a good set of basic knives-- buy these.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nowhere near as good as genuine Wusthof or Henckels..., May 10, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: J.A. Henckels International Eversharp Pro 3-Piece Stainless Steel Knife Set (Kitchen)
I recently got this set and the 2 piece carving set of the same series. I know I should not have expected much for this great price, but the knives do not have anywhere as good a feel as the classic line of wusthof or the henckels 4 or 5 star knives. They are very light in weight, mostly due to the handles. Much better than a target or kmart knife, and great to start, but I expect to switch mine out with 'real' knives as my budget will allow.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, will far surpass most users' expectations, July 30, 2008
This review is from: J.A. Henckels International Forged Synergy 16-Piece Knife Set (Kitchen)
This is a variation of my review of the J.A. Henckels International Forged Synergy 13-Piece Knife Set. But this 16-piece set is the one I'd recommend, so here goes... My wife and I have been using the Forged Synergy knives for over 5 years, and we couldn't be happier with them. They are well made, well-balanced, have beautiful handles, a nice finish, and hold a very sharp edge--we've sliced tomatoes with all of them. If you're buying your first set of fine knives, these WILL hold up to the Henckels reputation for quality.

Now regarding what some others have said about rusting and quality, I'll just add my two cents. There is a "Forged Synergy" and a "Fine Edge Synergy" series, and the main kitchen knives in those sets are NOT the same (though the steak knives appear to be so). The forged series has a metal tine that runs all... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Henckels "Forged Synergy" Knives, December 2, 2007

The prior reviewer must be rating a different model of Henckels knives than the "Forged Synergy." These knives are the second best I have ever used, second only to Henckels Pro and Gourmet knives which are 2-5X the cost of Forged Synergy. Possibly the other reviewer meant to review Henckels "Fine Edge Synergy" knives which are a much lesser quality that I would not suggest buying. If you are a home cook/chef, these are more knife than you will ever need.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great knive set with a few flaws., June 17, 2010

This review is from: J.A. Henckels International Forged Synergy 16-Piece Knife Set (Kitchen)
These are mid-range steel with excellent edge retention and above par corrosion resistance. The weight is well balanced, single forged steel from blade tip to handle base, and with regular honing these should never need sharpening. That said, these are a mid-grade steel, not premium.

I think what people are referring to as rust is actually a milder form of oxidation (rust is a more serious oxidation that breaks down the structural integrity of metal). My grandfather taught us to never put a good knife in the dishwasher b/c the fast "heating and cooling" cycle tends to break down the anti-corrosive properties. This can (and will) happen to any metal regularly exposed to the elements, though a higher grade steel will be more resistant.

Recently my roommate (in her late-night stupor), placed the chef knife from this set on the bottom shelf of our dishwasher. What came out were two tiny yellow spots on the crux of the blade near the top of where the handle starts. My... Read more

J.A. HENCKELS Fine Edge Pro 7-Piece Knife Set with Hardwood Block

Amazon.com Review

This set represents a revelation for any cook with a drawer full of stained, blunt knives. Nearly every basic kitchen-cutlery need is satisfied in one package compact enough to place on the counter within reach. The set includes a 7-inch hollow-edge santoku, an 8-inch chef's knife, a 5-inch serrated utility, and a 3-inch paring knife for peeling and cleaning vegetables and fruits. A 9-inch sharpening steel keeps their edges in order, and a pair of kitchen shears to snip herbs, flowers, or string is also included. Everything fits into the rubber-footed, solid hardwood block. International Fine Edge is an inexpensive cutlery line made in countries other than Henckels's home of Germany. The knives don't have bolsters and the steel is of lesser quality than Henckels's premier lines--the blades are less strong. Knives are dishwasher-safe, but it's not recommended. --Fred Brack

3.0 out of 5 stars Cheaper for a reason, July 28, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: J.A. Henckels International Fine Edge Pro 7-Piece Knife Set with Block (Kitchen)
Although very sharp out of the box, these knives have nothing in common with the products one expects from Henckels. The editorial review says the steel is not of the same quality. Well, there is a lot less of it as well. The knives are extremely light weight and there is quite a bit if flex in the blades if you are cutting anything more tenacious than veggies. The block and steel are fine and the set is probably an decent value for the money - but that is about it.

I don't even feel these knives are worth the advertised price. I have used these for about 5 years and have been thoroughly unimpressed. I gave these one star because Henckels should be ashamed to put their name on these knives.

pros: They work (sort of), they are relatively cheap, and you get the Henckels name. I have washed mine in a dishwasher for 5 years and they still hold up.

cons: The steel is poor quality (doesn't hold an edge well), the fit and finish is poor, and the set is over priced for their underwhelming performance.

bottom line: You can get an equivalent set of knives for less money that performs better, you just won't have the Henckels name.

I sharpen these knives and they are dull within just a few uses. The stainless steel is soft and unimpressive. The honing steel needs to be used frequently with these knives to keep them cutting well.

I think most people will find much better performance from a high... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Henckels Makes The Very Best--Even In Their Lower Line, November 27, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: J.A. Henckels International Fine Edge Pro 7-Piece Knife Set with Block (Kitchen)
I have had this set of Henckels International Line knifes and block for a few years now and am very satisfied. No, it is not the most expensive grouping they make but they are wonderful. They stay sharp with very fine edges. My favorite is the bread knife, perfectly balanced to finely slice my homemade rye & pumpernickle swirl breads. Note: I do hand-wash mine, even though thay are dishwasher safe.

At a good bargain price, you get 5 knifes for almost any task, the wood block with the Henckels logo, a sharpener, and even a slot to add a pair of Henckels kitchen shears (which I highly recommend).

Of course, if you can afford it, the higher line must be exquisite. But due to their lower cost, I was able to give a set of these to my brother last year with a gift certificate to a gourmet butcher shop & he was ecstatic. This grouping makes a perfect starter set--great for newlyweds, house-warming parties, and holiday gifts--just ask my brother!
